Gold Plated vs Gold Vermeil vs Solid Gold: What to Actually Buy in the UAE (2026 Guide)
يشارك
Walk through the Gold Souk or scroll any UAE jewellery store and you will see the same words next to very different prices: 18K gold, 18K gold plated, gold vermeil, PVD gold. They photograph identically. They are not the same thing, and the difference decides whether a AED 130 necklace or a AED 3,000 one is the right buy for you.
This guide is written for UAE shoppers: what each term means, honest lifespan in Dubai heat and humidity, realistic prices, and when we would tell you not to buy plated.
The four types, in one table
| Type | What it is | Typical UAE price (necklace) | Lifespan with normal care | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Solid 18K gold | 75% pure gold alloyed with copper/silver, all the way through | AED 1,500 – 6,000+ | Lifetime; can be resold by weight | Weddings, heirlooms, investment |
| Gold vermeil | Sterling silver base with a thick (2.5 micron+) gold layer | AED 350 – 900 | 2 – 5 years | Daily wear when budget allows |
| 18K gold plated (quality) | Brass or stainless-steel base with a real 18K gold layer, ideally 0.5 micron or more, tarnish-resistant coating | AED 60 – 200 | 12 – 24 months of regular wear | Everyday, trend pieces, gifting, stacking |
| "Gold tone" / flash plated | Ultra-thin wash (under 0.2 micron) over cheap alloy | AED 10 – 40 | Weeks to a few months | One event, then it goes green |
What "18K gold plated" really means
18K describes the purity of the gold layer (75% gold), not how much gold is on the piece. Plating is measured in microns. Most of the cheap jewellery sold on marketplaces is flash plated at 0.1 – 0.2 microns, which is why it turns your skin green after a beach day. Quality plated jewellery uses 0.5 micron or more, a hypoallergenic base (brass or 316L stainless steel, never nickel-heavy alloys) and a protective anti-tarnish top coat.
At Alphenik every 18K piece is plated on a hypoallergenic base with a tarnish-resistant coating, because a necklace that fails in the first summer in Dubai is not worth selling at any price.
Gold vermeil: the honest middle
Vermeil (pronounced ver-may) is the legally defined step up: a sterling-silver base with at least 2.5 microns of gold. It lasts longer than standard plating and can be re-plated by a jeweller. The trade-off is price: expect AED 350+ for a simple pendant in the UAE. If you wear one necklace every single day and want it to last three years without re-plating, vermeil is worth it. If you rotate pieces, stack rings, or buy for gifting, plated makes more sense per dirham.
PVD gold: what the stainless-steel brands mean
PVD (physical vapour deposition) bonds a titanium-nitride and gold layer onto stainless steel. It is very scratch-resistant and waterproof, which makes it good for bangles and chains you never take off. The limitation is colour: PVD gold tends to be slightly darker or more "brassy" than real 18K plating, and it cannot be re-plated once it wears. Good for gym wear, less good if you want the exact warm tone of real gold.
Solid gold in the UAE: when it is the right answer
Dubai is one of the cheapest places in the world to buy solid gold because there is no VAT on investment gold and making charges are low. If the piece is a wedding gift, a milestone gift, or something you intend to keep for decades, solid 18K or 21K from a Souk jeweller is the right buy and no plated product competes with it. Just be honest about the use case: most women wear their solid pieces on occasions and their everyday pieces are plated, because you do not want to worry about a AED 4,000 chain at the beach or in the gym.
How to tell quality plating before you pay
- Ask for the base metal. Brass, copper or 316L stainless steel are fine. "Alloy" with no detail usually means nickel.
- Ask for micron thickness. If a seller cannot answer, assume flash plating.
- Look at the price. A "18K gold" necklace at AED 15 is a wash coat. Real plating on a good base starts around AED 60 in the UAE.
- Check the returns policy. A store confident in its plating will take it back.
- Weight. Quality plated pieces have some heft; hollow, feather-light pieces are usually the cheap alloy.
Will plated gold survive Dubai's climate?
Yes, if you follow three habits: take it off before the pool and sea (chlorine and salt strip plating fastest), put it on after perfume and sunscreen, and wipe it with a dry cloth after a sweaty day. With that, 12 – 24 months of daily wear is realistic. We wrote a full care guide for gold plated jewellery in the UAE.

Frequently asked questions
Is 18K gold plated jewellery real gold?
The outer layer is real 18K gold; the core is a base metal such as brass or stainless steel. It is not solid gold and has no resale value by weight.
How long does 18K gold plated jewellery last in the UAE?
Quality plating on a hypoallergenic base lasts 12 – 24 months of regular wear if it is kept away from chlorine, salt water and perfume. Flash-plated pieces can fade within weeks.
Is gold vermeil better than gold plated?
Vermeil has a thicker gold layer over sterling silver and lasts longer, but costs 3 – 5 times more. For everyday rotation pieces and gifts, quality 18K plating gives better value; for one piece worn daily for years, vermeil is worth the premium.
Can I shower with gold plated jewellery?
Occasionally yes, but soap and steam shorten its life. Remove it for pools, sea and workouts.
Does gold plated jewellery turn skin green?
Only when the plating has worn through to a copper-heavy alloy, or when the base contains nickel. A hypoallergenic base with proper plating thickness does not.
