Does Gold Plated Jewellery Tarnish in Dubai? What Heat, Humidity and Sea Water Actually Do
يشارك
This is the question we get most from UAE customers, usually after a cheap piece from a marketplace turned dark or green in a month. The answer has two parts: gold itself does not tarnish, ever. What tarnishes is the base metal underneath once the gold layer wears thin or gets a pinhole. So the real question is how fast Dubai's climate wears through plating, and what you can do about it.
What tarnish actually is
Tarnish is a surface reaction between a metal and sulphur or oxygen. Copper turns green-brown; brass darkens; nickel greys and irritates skin. Pure gold does none of this, which is why solid 18K from the Souk still looks new after twenty years. Plated jewellery has a gold skin over one of those reactive metals. Wear the skin off, or crack it, and the metal below starts reacting.
Why Dubai is harder on plating than London or Paris
- Sweat. At 40°C you sweat constantly under a chain. Sweat is salty and slightly acidic; it attacks base metal through the smallest gap in the plating and it also builds a film that dulls the gold.
- Humidity. 70 – 90% humidity from June to September means jewellery never fully dries in a drawer. Moisture plus sulphur in the air is the tarnish recipe.
- Sea and pool. Salt water and chlorine are the fastest way to strip thin plating. One beach afternoon with a flash-plated necklace on can finish it.
- Perfume and sunscreen. Both are used heavily here and both contain alcohol and oils that dissolve the protective top coat and dull the finish.
- Air conditioning cycles. Walking from 42°C into 18°C creates condensation on metal several times a day.
Which pieces fail first
- Rings: hand-washing, sanitiser and friction from other rings. Always the first to show wear.
- Bracelets and bangles: constant contact with the desk, the steering wheel, a watch.
- Necklace chains: sweat at the back of the neck. The clasp area goes before the pendant.
- Earrings: last to fail. Least sweat, least friction. If you want a plated piece that lasts three years, buy earrings.
How long quality plating lasts in the UAE
| Plating thickness | Typical price | Realistic life in Dubai with basic care |
|---|---|---|
| Flash / under 0.2 micron | AED 10 – 40 | 2 – 8 weeks |
| 0.5 – 1 micron, anti-tarnish coat | AED 60 – 200 | 12 – 24 months |
| Vermeil, 2.5 micron+ on silver | AED 350+ | 2 – 5 years |
Every 18K piece at Alphenik sits in the middle row: real 18K plating on a hypoallergenic base with a tarnish-resistant top coat. If you want the full comparison, read gold plated vs vermeil vs solid gold in the UAE.
The three habits that double the life of plated gold
1. Last on, first off
Jewellery goes on after perfume, sunscreen, moisturiser and hair spray have dried, and comes off before the pool, the sea, the gym and the shower. This one habit is worth more than any cleaning product.
2. Wipe, then store dry and separate
At the end of the day, wipe each piece with a soft dry cloth to remove sweat and oils. Store it in its pouch or a lined box, one piece per compartment so plating does not rub against other metal. Never leave jewellery on the bathroom counter; steam is humidity turned up to maximum.
3. Clean gently, never with paste or chemicals
Lukewarm water, a drop of mild dish soap, a soft cloth. Rinse, dry completely. No toothpaste, no baking soda, no silver dip, no ultrasonic cleaner: all of them remove plating. Our complete care guide covers cleaning step by step.
Can tarnished plated jewellery be fixed?
Light dulling: yes, with the cleaning method above. Actual tarnish where the base metal shows through: no, the plating has worn away. A jeweller can re-plate brass pieces for around AED 50 – 100, which is only worth it for sentimental pieces. Skin turning green means the plating is gone and the base contains copper; stop wearing that piece against skin.
Pieces built for the UAE summer
- Micha Gold Earrings (AED 82): earrings last longest, and these are small enough for daily wear.
- Tima Gold Earrings (AED 140): a statement pair for evenings when the day pieces come off.
- Arza Gold Bracelet (AED 78): a minimal clip with no dangling charms to rub.
- Raisa Gold Necklace (AED 166): a solid pendant on an adjustable chain, so the clasp can sit away from the sweatiest point.

Frequently asked questions
Does 18K gold plated jewellery tarnish?
The gold layer itself does not. The base metal under it tarnishes once the plating wears through. Quality plating with an anti-tarnish coat stays bright for 12 – 24 months of daily wear in the UAE.
Why does gold plated jewellery tarnish faster in Dubai?
Sweat, humidity, sea water, chlorine, perfume and sunscreen all attack plating, and all of them are more present in the UAE than in cooler climates.
Can I wear gold plated jewellery to the beach in Dubai?
Take it off before swimming. Salt water and pool chlorine strip plating faster than anything else.
How do I stop gold plated jewellery turning my skin green?
Buy pieces with a hypoallergenic base and proper plating thickness, put them on after perfume and sunscreen, and wipe them dry after wear. Green skin means the plating is gone and the base contains copper.
